Located on the Adriatic Sea along the eastern side of the Istrian peninsula, Opatija has a long an rich history to discover. The town’s name derives from the old Benedictine opatija (“abbey”) of San Giacomo al Palo that dates back to medieval times. During the period of 1814-1918, Opatija and the Istrian territory was ruled by the Austrian Empire. After World War I the town was ceded to Italy and then to Yugoslavia after World War II. With the fall of Yugoslavia in 1992, Opatija was returned to the country of Croatia.

In 2013 Croatia joined the European Union (EU) and in 2023 it become fully integrated. Euros are the official currency and it is part of the Schengen Area, meaning free travel across other member borders, without controls.

Flights and Arrival

Opatija is conveniently located near multiple international and regional airports. We recommend flying into one of the airports below and renting a car. For those that prefer multi-city airfare, flying into one city and out another, you will want to start and end your rental in the same country to avoid hefty fees.

Regional Airports

  • Zračna luka Rijeka (RJK) - 30m drive

  • Zračna luka Pula (PUY) - 1h 15m drive

  • Aeroporto di Trieste (TRS) - 1h 30m drive

International Airports

  • Venice Marco Polo (VCE) - 2h 30m drive

  • Franjo Tuđman International Airport Zagreb (ZAG) - 2h 15m drive

  • Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) - 1h 45m drive

Below is a guide on arriving to the destination.

Rental Car

Driving through Croatia is relatively easy, and the infrastructure is well developed with road signs marked in English. The major US companies, Hertz, Avis, Budget, and Enterprise are well represented. There is also Europcar and SIXT which are reputable companies and can have premium cars.

Upon returning a car rental, please note that gas stations are not necessarily 24 hrs and most have business hours of 7am-8pm, Mon-Sat.

  • From Slovenia: Toll roads are fully electronic and go by your car registrations number (license plate). Toll roads in Slovenia marked with a beginning ‘A’ or ‘H’ on a map. If you plan to use these roads, you can buy a 1-week e-vignette, once you have your car registration.

  • From Italy: We recommend taking the train to Trieste and then renting a car. The drive from Trieste to Opatija is a scenic route through Slovenia and about 1.5 hours. You do not need a toll pass for this section of highway, as it begins with ‘E’.

  • From Croatia:

  • Zagreb, Pula, Rijeka are nearby airports with many car hire companies and easily accessible to Opatija.

  • Most highways in Croatia are toll roads. You do not need to plan for this, as each toll terminal takes cash or credit card.

  • Opatija has one car rental agency Sixt, and is a good option for those that want to arrive via transfer and rent a car for a day or two.

Parking in Opatija

We suggest using the car park offered by your accommodation. Pricing varies from free to €30. We will have the parking lot at Villa Ariston available on Friday and Saturday. Please contact Karl to see if spaces are still available.

Private Transfer

If you would like to arrange a private transfer from the surrounding airports, please reach out to myself or our wedding planner directly, Ana Udvardi, who can provide options.

Taxi

Taxi stands are available at most airports, train stations, and ferry terminals to get to your destination. Uber is available throughout Croatia and easily available in Opatija. A ride 30 minute ride from the Rijeka airport to Opatija starts at around $30.

Bus

The bus system in Croatia easily connects you to all major nearby cities and airports. Google maps provides the best schedule, services, and real-time status.

Train

The Croatia train system is dated and slow, making frequent stops. We were advised that busses are more efficient and cheaper.

Italy’s train system is advance. If coming from Italy, we recommend taking the train to the Trieste train station and renting a car or hiring a transfer.

Ferry

Ferries are limited in October, and may no longer be a viable option. Operated by Adriatic Lines by Kompas, boats depart from Venice or Trieste, Italy and connect to the nearby towns of Rovinj and Porec, where you can continue along your way with a car rental or taxi.
